It’s been a long time since we last posted. Mainly we have been moving into the new and remodeled parts of the house and have just been too exhausted to update this blog!

Our new bathroom is a joy. As a reminder, we gutted the original master bath and enlarged it to include a new accessible shower.

Speaking of the shower, here it is!

The new shower works great!

The tile expert from our builder constructed the built-in seat (inside the shower) with a slight downward pitch so that it sheds water toward the drain. Outside the shower, the teak transfer seat is a great place to sit while drying off after showering. It folds up against the wall if necessary, but so far we have left it in the “down” position.

Shower controls.

The shower controls are easily reached from the seat. The small upper control is a diverter that sends the flow of water to either the handheld shower head or to the main shower head on the left (not pictured). The sturdy grab bar doubles as a handy holder for wash clothes.

Looking back into the main part of the master bath, we have a nice new tub that we probably won’t use very often. It’s gorgeous, but we both prefer showering.

We may never use the new bathtub, but it’s beautiful nevertheless.

The mosaic tile trim around the tub matches the trim in the shower.

The master bath has a double vanity with a “tower” in the middle to store toiletries.

Double vanity with storage tower.

The toilet features a curvy grab bar and a storage cubby — a good place to stash reading material.

Toilet with curved grab bar and storage cubby.

This was one of the busiest days yet, with insulators, painters, carpet layers, and the Wesson guys all working at the same time.

In the addition, the new carpet was laid in the bedroom and a few pieces of furniture return at last to their proper places.

The bedroom carpet is in!

By the end of the day, however, the bedroom was filled with boxes containing the organizers for the walk-in closet, so we won’t be sleeping in the bedroom just yet.

Boxes of closet organizers.

Chad from Wesson added some nice trim to the window seat, and then the painters went to work. It’s just what we wanted.

The window seat with a coat of paint.

Overall, the bedroom is really taking shape.

Bedroom progress: carpet closet doors, HVAC registers, recessed lights.

We’ve been waiting for delivery of some trim pieces for the bathtub area. It finally arrived, along with the tub fixtures, so that area is finished except for final paint.

The bathtub tile matches the new shower.

The insulators blew insulation into the attic above the addition and added some extra insulation to the older parts of the house as well. Along with the new HVAC system, the house should now be comfortable year round. No more cold offices in the winter; no more sweating in the family room.

Knobs and pulls have been installed in the laundry and master bath. We went with simple, nickel satin knobs all around, as opposed to more ornate hardware.

Knobs are installed in the laundry room.

In the accessible shower, all of the controls for the handheld shower have now been installed. Drilling through the brand new tile to mount the fixtures is nerve-wracking for the plumber!

Chad from Wesson (our builder) spent much of his day building the window seat at the end of the master suite hallway. It has a hatch in the top so we can use the interior for storage. Lynda will be making a cushion for the seat.

Window seat in master suite hallway.

The guys also completed repairs on a crack in the ceiling of the quilt studio and thoroughly cleaned up the areas of new construction, all in preparation for the return of the painters later this week.

In addition, the new toilet in the guest bathroom is now functional, replacing the old one which had seen better days.

The new ceiling medallions are now on hand so the electrician can install the replacement ceiling fixtures in the living room.

Medallions for ceiling fixtures in living room.

We are awaiting delivery of two pocket doors for the addition. The first two that we received were warped, so new ones had to be ordered.

The electrician worked on Saturday and almost finished everything.

He connected and tested a new phone line for the bedroom, added a quad outlet near my workbench in the garage, installed a cable TV box in the bedroom, and installed the bedroom ceiling fan.

Bedroom ceiling fan.

He removed the old ceiling fan in the living room but did not have a new ceiling medallion. So for the moment, we have this instead of our new fan:

In Lynda’s quilt studio, she asked for a design wall where quilt blocks and partially completed quilt tops can be pinned up and rearranged to reach a final design. She decided that the design wall could also function as a door for the storage closet by attaching the whole design wall to a sliding barn door.

Barn door track.

Matt, one of Wesson’s cabinet makers, made the large door by joining together two 30″ hollow core doors and mounted rollers along the top.

Barn door roller.

Then Lynda (assisted by yours truly) placed two layers of fabric — cotton batting and gray flannel — on the doors and cut them to size.

The layers: Hollow core door, ¾” foam, white batting, gray flannel.

Fabric laid over the door.

Matt folded the fabric around to the back of the door, stretched it tight, and stapled it in place. Twenty minutes later, Lynda had the design wall of her dreams. Our thanks to Matt for understanding exactly what Lynda wanted and then making it happen.

Finished barn door / design wall.

At the other end of the house, the last unit of the master bath vanity was installed. The piece was specially modified at the Wesson shop to accommodate a wheelchair should it ever be required. The toe kick is extra high, and the doors are recessed. The doors can still be opened to access the plumbing.

Universal design vanity built for wheelchair access.

With the vanity in place the countertop was installed, followed by a storage tower for bathroom items.

Master bath vanities with storage tower.

While all this was going on, Mike the electrician was hard at work installing fixtures and outlets and wiring them into the breaker panel in the garage.
